Alcohol consumption

According to the WHO, the harmful use of alcohol results in around 3 million deaths worldwide each year, with more than half of these deaths attributed to non-communicable diseases such as liver disease, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers. Nearly 300 million people worldwide live with alcohol use disorders, which are associated with premature mortality and multiple other health conditions. Pharmacists are well placed to identify risky drinking behaviours, provide education, help patients reduce alcohol consumption and dispense appropriate medicines to help manage alcohol use disorders. Through proactive screening, counselling, medication management and tailored advice, pharmacists can play a key role in reducing alcohol-related harm and helping patients to manage their alcohol consumption.
